Do I really need to keep my gutters clear?

Overflowing gutters are one of the most common causes of internal damp and external brickwork erosion.

I am often asked whether it is really necessary to keep gutters free of debris.  Not many people take real care of their guttering and fewer understand how important it is to keep it free of debris.  The most common cause of damp internally and erosion to brickwork and pointing externally is poorly maintained guttering.

Here is an example of a gutter in urgent need of clearing:

Gutter overflowing with debris

This leads to:

Damaged brickwork

And also to this:

Internal mould and dampness

The water had leaked into the cavity and cross the ceiling joists to ruin the plasterboard.
